We offer speech therapy for 1 to 18 years, but it’s best not to wait -- many communication disorders can be reversed or prevented with early treatment!

Yes, there are! Here are a few effective techniques you can try:
Imitation: having a child imitate you helps him or her to produce words and sounds.
Expanding: using a child’s language and expanding it can help make his/her language more complex (e.g., child says “ball”, adult can say, “that is your ball!”).
Read Aloud: emphasize and reinforce new words, ask questions about the story or ask the child to retell the story (if age appropriate).
Narrate Everything: modeling your own speech and language can increase exposure to correct production and enhance a child’s abilities.
Communication Temptation: Create situations where a child needs to gesture, vocalize or verbalize to have his or her needs met before getting a desired object (e.g., at snack time-only give a few crackers or “forget” his/her cup).

Sessions are usually 30 minutes long, and after each session, the therapist discusses with the caregivers what was targeted during the therapy session and also discusses any homework or activities they can do at home. It's important to remember that there is no one size fits all approach to speech therapy. All therapy is unique and tailored to your child's needs.

At The Speechful Center, we are strong believers in learning through play! To younger clients, our therapy sessions might seem like we are just having fun, but we are targeting many different goals throughout our sessions. The play is deliberate, and Speech Language Pathologists are trained to use many "tools" available to us in our tool box. We are working to help expand your child's speech and language skills. Sometimes there might be games (which we call speech activities) used during therapy. These activities are used to help motivate your child and provide reinforcement. No two therapy sessions look exactly the same, because the therapy sessions are individual to your child.

While our office is comfortable and cozy (like a home away from home!), we understand that for some busy caregivers, it is difficult to get their child to the clinic before 6 pm. Because of this, The Speechful Center also offers sessions at daycares, private schools, and on location (such as a library). During our consultation, we will determine what works best for the caretaker’s schedule. If your child’s school or daycare is open to having a speech therapist come and use a room for sessions, we are happy to make arrangements with them. It's a team effort, but the family, therapist, and facility director all work together to provide the best treatment for the child.

Treatment is always more successful when all therapists work together on goals for your child. We will contact your child’s other therapy providers, and in some cases, even have monthly case meetings to discuss progress and goals.
